You'll need to start your trek along the gorge early to reach this well-located hostel before nightfall, but it's certainly worth it. Its position along the highest section of the upper trail (the lower 'trail' is mostly tarmac for day-visitors) makes for unparalleled views.
The hostel was made famous by Michael Palin - who stayed here during his 2004 Himalayas television series - after he focused cameras on the vista from Halfway's communal bathroom, supposedly the 'Number One Toilet in Heaven and Earth'.
The bedrooms are simple but clean and a pleasant terrace enables you to enjoy a breakfast of muesli and yoghurt, or fruit salad and pancakes, while taking in the scenery outside.
If you don't make it here before dark, the hostels along the way are equally welcome refuges and often much quieter during the high season. If you get as far as The Halfway, however, you can take your time finishing the trail the following day and relax as you take in the sights.
