For these traveling from Nepal overland to Tibet, the Friendship Highway from Kathmandu - Lhasa is the one they are driving on. The journey is without doubt one of the most spectacular in the world.
From Kathmandu the road travels gently up to Kodari (1873m), before leaving Nepal to make a steep switch-back ascent to Zhangmu (2300m), the Tibetan border town. From here the road climbs, past to the top of the Tong-la pass (5120m), where travelers from Kathmandu are likely to feel decidedly weak and the wobbly due to the altitude. Old Tingri (4390m) provides fabulous views of Mt Everest and the Himalayan Range and is where many travelers spend the night before traveling on. This route combines such great sights of the Mt. Everest, Shigatse, Gyantse and Yamdrok Lake before arrival Lhasa.
